Press Release -- Milagro votes to become Open and Affirming.

Milagro Christian Church Votes Unanimously to Become Open and Affirming

Pueblo, Colorado – March 8, 2015 – During a vote on Sunday, March 8, 2015, the congregation at Milagro Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) on Pueblo’s South side, unanimously voted to become “Open and Affirming.” The vote came after over four months of discernment and discussion. An “open and affirming” congregation fully welcomes people who are gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, queer or questioning into the full life and leadership of the church.

"It just so happened that today we had visitor who recently came out to his family and friends. He said that no less than three times last week, he was told he was an abomination and that he was going to hell. That is unacceptable. We are all made in God’s image. We are all children of a radically welcoming and radically inclusive God and we are all loved, deeply, by God. Of late, there have been a number of people who use their religious beliefs as an excuse to justify discrimination. I am proud that today the people at Milagro have demonstrated that their understanding of the Gospel is the reason for inclusion and acceptance,” said Marnie Leinberger, Pastor.

“The people at Milagro have always been a warm and welcoming group of people, committed to following in The Way of Jesus, and they have always been concerned about the message that people, especially members of the GLBTQ community and their friends and family, hear from some segments of Christianity. We are letting the world know that no matter one’s sexual orientation or gender identity or expression, all are welcomed at Milagro. We hope our vote today shines as a beacon of light and hope for those who have been hurt, marginalized, excluded or shunned by church, for whatever reason.  Milagro truly welcomes all people just as Jesus modeled for us through his actions and ministry,” said Kathy Lewis, Milagro member and member of the Open and Affirming task force. Other members of the Task Force include Avery Lewis, Hilary Chigro and Gary Price.

With this vote, Milagro becomes the third church in Colorado in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) denomination to become “Open and Affirming.” The other two are Fireside Christian Church in Aurora and Cairn Christian Church in Lafayette.

Milagro Christian Church is a congregation in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) denomination. It was founded in 2004.  Their services are on Sunday mornings, at 10:30 a.m.
