Discipline Yourself, or else ~~ Lillian Daniel
Therefore prepare your minds for action; discipline yourselves; set all your hope on the grace that Jesus Christ will bring you when he is revealed. 1 Peter 1:13
If holiness is related to discipline, I may be in trouble. I didn't join the UCC (United Church of Christ) to be told to discipline myself. I associate that kind of talk with churches that I do not want to belong to. But here it is in the Bible. If the early Christians needed to be told this, maybe I do, too.
Many of us associate discipline with cruelty at the hands of another; therefore it is not something we want to do to ourselves. Who wants to give themselves a punishment? But this scripture is about self-discipline, not discipline from someone else. We are told that this kind of discipline will "prepare our minds for action."
How many times have you wanted to do something good for God, but, somehow, it never happened? Maybe we need to focus less on the action and more on being a disciple. Our discipline is not the result of a cruel and more powerful person threatening us. We are disciples of Jesus, who offers love as the discipline. What is it that Jesus wants you to focus on?
PRAYER: Gracious God, what action should I prepare my mind for? In what area do I need discipline myself? Jesus, help me to pay attention, so that I may be holy by doing your work in the world. Amen.
